First, it beheaded Khaled al-Asaad , the year-old retired chief archaeologist of the city, before mutilating his body. Then it blew up the ancient temple of Baal Shamin, built in AD These are both despicable acts. But might it not also seem repugnant that judging by press and social media reaction many of us find the destruction of a stone building at least as shocking as the decapitation of a human being? We know that people matter much more than things, and yet it seems we can be more moved by cultural vandalism than cold-blooded murder. Isis ‘blows up temple dating back to 17AD’ in Palmyra Read more A form of compassion fatigue might partly explain this. The relentless news about people being brutally killed by Isis can be numbing, and with good reason. If we truly stopped to think about what each such death meant for victims and their families we would surely become overwhelmed by despair.

November 11, Sex and Dating in Turkey One thing I have wanted to write about for a while in this column is the view of sex and dating in Turkey. I have watched mostly foreign and some Turkish friends grapple with dating and all its highs and—more often—lows, and have become endlessly fascinated with the subject. Although it is not something I have to partake in, it is a subject that fascinates me.
A Turkish male friend once told me that one night stands are not really a thing, and especially not for women no big surprise there. Another Turkish male friend told me that although men and women can be friends, growing up in large mixed-sex friendships groups is a lot less common than in other parts of the world. He also told me that if a girl and a boy are friends, pretty soon one of them will develop a romantic interest in the other.

British imperialism divided Kurdistan, a country with its own unique language and culture, into a minority inside the nations of Iraq, Turkey, Syria, and Iran. Today the Kurds are the largest nation without a homeland in the world.
Sophia Lierenfeld didn’t set out to give dating advice to Syrian refugees. Assimilation is a big issue in German politics these days. Her self-funded workshop, Improv Without Borders , gathers weekly to let Europeans and refugees do improvisational theater together. On a recent Thursday afternoon, about a dozen men and women from Afghanistan, Syria, France, Germany and elsewhere milled about awkwardly while Lierenfeld waltzed among them and gave out hugs.
After some warmup games, they broke off into groups to perform skits. A big part of improv involves trying on new versions of oneself — an activity that, in their regular lives, can come with high stakes.

The Arab myth of western women Khaled Diab Unflattering as some western stereotypes are of Arab men, western women also get a bad press in conservative Arab circles.
The changed occured after many complaints from Zena regarding the negative effects this blog was having on her reputation Finally, eternal praise and thanks to Andy ‘Leffe-loving’ C peace be upon him for helping me realise my full potential by telling me who and what I am: Saturday, March 11, The problem with Syrian men… This is a rant. Beware, this is a rant!
That was certainly the case in Aleppo anyway, where, surprisingly, men are even more desperate there. Well it is to do with the public behaviour and attitude of a lot of Syrian men towards foreign women, liberally dressed Syrians meaning no hijab and over-liberally dressed Syrian women of which there are very few and can only be found in the Christian quarter of Damascus.
The behaviour ranges from in order of frequency, firstly the most frequent horrible perving stares, poorly executed sexual noises these can be quite funny at times , sex related comments, purposely bumping into, coming close to and finally groping women. Thankfully the last on that list is the least frequent. The degree to which a woman has to plan here public behaviour is a sad reflection of the extent of the problem. Keep your head down. Unfortunately for a foreign woman here it is very difficult to make friendships with Syrian guys, so the frequent and resounding experience of most foreign women tends to be rather depressing.
Furthermore, the treatment of women in countries such as Egypt and Kuwait is reportedly worse and in some cases, like the latter, far worse. So it seems to me that the more conservative the society, the worse she gets treated on the street.

Focus In Turkey, Syrian women and girls increasingly vulnerable to exploitation Dubious matchmakers and criminal gangs are preying on the Syrian women and girls who have sought shelter in Turkey. The sexual exploitation ranges from illicit marriages to prostitution. They face hard lives and tough choices. By Dominique Soguel Correspondent Gazientep and Sanliurfa, Turkey In the refugee camps and crowded Turkish towns on the border with Syria , impoverished Syrian women and girls are falling prey to criminal rings that are forcing them into sexually exploitative situations ranging from illicit marriages to outright prostitution.
Girls are also targeted for early marriage or sexual exploitation.
6 days ago · Damascus, SANA – Syria has always known as the cradle of ancient great civilizations and home to the oldest human settlements in the world, a fact that has been demonstrated by .
Instead, women who relocate or cross the border seeking safety often find themselves in dangerously unstable and isolated situations with little support. There are more than nine million internally displaced Syrian persons and refugees. Two-thirds are women and children. Although crucial, efforts by governments and relief organizations to provide basic necessities for survival, such as food and shelter, mask the need for a closer look at how the Syrian crisis impacts various sectors of the refugee population in different ways.
Refugee and Woman The effects of wars on civilian populations disproportionately target women in specifically gendered ways. With the rapid deterioration of security, societies become hyper-patriarchalized through violence, marginalizing women, and threatening their daily security.
ISIS erasing history, culture in Syria and Iraq
Share via Email When I wrote last month about western stereotypes of Arab men, several commenters, including WeAreTheWorld , suggested that Arab stereotypes of western women would also be worth exploring. Just as Arab men are stereotyped and pigeonholed in the west, western women hover somewhere between myth and fantasy in the Arab world. Like the traditional orientalist image of the harem , Arab views of the contemporary western woman are also highly sexualised. In fact, many Arab men, particularly those with little contact with the west, have this fantasy of western women that comes straight out of Playboy magazine or the grainy images of pirate pornos.
In this view, western women are oversexed, promiscuous and have revolving doors in their knickers. This can lead to hassle and harassment for western women travelling or living in Egypt and some other Arab countries, although in places like Yemen men will either just stare or the western woman will become invisible like the local women, as my wife found while travelling alone through the country.

May 13, by American Girl I get a number of emails from American women asking advice about their Arab men. Each situation is unique and all very interesting. Some of the men are Arab but born and raised in America. Some of the women who write are working in Kuwait and dating a Kuwaiti. Some are living in their home country but having an online relationship with an Arab man living in his. I wish I had all the answers and could guide everyone off into a land of never ending bliss.
So what are some of the biggest cultural differences you should expect to encounter? Chances are he was. Having intimate relations with you then either disappearing for a few days… or forever. This happens often and for a lot of reasons.
Introduction In , Lebanese society was riddled with deep social, economic, political, and sectarian divisions. Individual Lebanese were primarily identified with their family as the principal object of their loyalty and the basis of marriage and social relationships as well as the confessional system. This, in turn, tended to clash with national integration and cohesion. Society was divided not only into diverse sectarian communities but also into socioeconomic strata that cut across confessional lines.
The Family The primacy of the family manifests itself in all phases of Lebanese life including political, financial, and personal relationships. In the political sphere, families compete with each other for power and prestige, and kinsmen combine forces to support family members in their quest for leadership.
Dating is quite common, it is common all over the middle-east, and Syria arguably is the most progressive socially. Premarital relationships do exist as well, it is ofc not publicised that it is done, though I remember watching a Syrian TV which mentioned this, and it was not in a bad light, but simply as a fact of life.
What do I need to know about verbal and non-verbal communications? Women with a head cover hijab are seen regularly in Syria. Some shake hands with men, others will not. The best way to deal with such a situation is to greet those women by putting your hand on your chest and say “Good morning” or “hello”. If the woman extends her hand, then you may shake it. Women can shake hands with women without awkwardness. Syrians stand close to each other and may hug or clasp hands. People of the same gender sometimes walk hand in hand.
They may also touch you on the shoulder.
